Youth Parliament

The Young People's Parliament Programme, approved by Resolution no. 42/2006, of 2 June, is an initiative of the Assembly of the Republic, aimed at young people in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and secondary education, in public, private and cooperative schools on the Continent, in the Autonomous Regions and in circles in Europe and beyond. Europe.

In the Azores, the program is developed by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in partnership with the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment, through the Regional Directorate for Youth, and the Regional Secretariat for Education, Culture and Sports, through the Regional Directorate for Education and Educational Administration. 

 

The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science approved the theme that gathered the greatest consensus, in the choices of the various circles, both in primary and secondary education. The theme under debate in the 2025/2026 edition of the Youth Parliament Program is: “Financial Literacy: young people COUNT!”

Basic education

The Rules of Procedure of the Youth Parliament are inspired by the operating rules of the Assembly of the Republic and, in the case of the Autonomous Regions, of the respective Legislative Assemblies, respecting the autonomy of young people at all stages of the election of their representatives, from school to National Session. It is made up of the following chapters: General Provisions, Electoral Process, School Session, District/Regional Session and National Session.

 

 

Azores Electoral District

The calendar for implementing the Program in the Azores, at secondary education level, is as follows:

1st Phase | 1 SEPTEMBER 2025 TO 29 JANUARY 2026

  • Schools Registration: September 1st to October 15th
  • Debates, campaign, elections and school session: 1 October 2025 to 23 January 2026
  • ​Send results: up to 4 days after the school session​

 

2nd Phase​ | FEBRUARY 23, 2026 TO MARCH 24, 2026

  • ​Sessions in the Districts and Autonomous Regions​​: on dates to be defined.

 

​ 3rd Phase | MAY 25th and 26th, 2026

  • National Session at the Assembly of the Republic (secondary education).

 

At District/Regional Sessions, deputies representing the schools of each district or autonomous region meet to approve the Recommendation Projects to be submitted to the National Session of the Youth Parliament and elect the deputies who will represent them in the Assembly of the Republic.
 

It is in the District/Regional Sessions that young deputies are given the experience of a parliamentary session.

“Youth Parliament Report – Azores” Award

The “Reporting Parliament of Young People – Azores” Award is created on the initiative of the Regional Coordination of the Azores of the Parliament of Young People program and is intended to encourage Azorean schools registered in the Parliament of Young People program to publicize their participation in this initiative, through the preparation of a report in written or multimedia format, published in the school's official media and, always as possible, in local or regional media outlets. 
 

This Award is intended to encourage schools registered in the Program to publicize their participation by producing a report in written or multimedia format, published in the school's official media and, whenever possible, also in local or regional media outlets.
 

Applications:

Schools that have a school newspaper, in paper or digital format, or collaboration with any media outlet in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, can apply for the Prize.
